General Information (watch this section for updates)
The 2012 S. CA. Stick Seminar will be held Saturday and Sunday March 24 and 25 at MiraCosta College in Oceanside, CA. It will feature two full days of instruction from Bob Culbertson and Tom Griesgraber as well as a special Saturday afternoon clinic with Emmett Chapman and a Stick Night performance Saturday night from all three instructors. Additionally a special "welcoming" Stick Night is scheduled for Friday Night at the Museum of Making Music in nearby Carlsbad, CA that will give interested seminar participants a chance to perform as well.

The seminar is open to all levels and all Stick, Grand Stick, NS/Stick and Stick Bass instrument configurations and tunings. All levels really does mean all levels and includes those who might simply want to try out a "Stick experience" before committing. A very small number of rental/loaner instruments may be available for in class use by people looking to "try before they buy." For details, contact Tom Griesgraber at tom@thossounds.com. Individual rooms at the school will allow for the teachers to provide a combination of small group and private or semi-private lessons.

Tom Griesgraber
Tom picked up his first Stick in July of 1997. Originally a guitar player, Tom is an honors graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Tom performs as both a soloist and with several collaborative projects including the San Diego based Agent 22 with drummer/didj player Ryan Moran (of Slightly Stoopid), an international duo with guitarist Bert Lams (of The California Guitar Trio) and a duo based in Italy with drummer Andrea Ruta.

Tom has also toured and recorded with drummer Jerry Marotta, recorded and toured as a guest with the California Guitar Trio, opened for several US and European tours with The Tony Levin Band, performed four times for the Grammys and opened shows for acts like Paula Cole, Andy Summers, Steve Hackett, Carl Palmer, Stickmen, Bill Bruford's Earthworks, Adrian Belew, Tim Reynolds, Tuck and Patti, Asia, Michael Manring, Stanley Jordan, The Dixie Dregs, Larry Carlton and Steve Lukather, Al Dimeola and many others.

Emmett Chapman
In addition to full time teachers Bob Culbertson and Tom Griesgraber, the 2012 S. CA. Stick Seminar will feature a special clinic from Stick inventor Emmett Chapman, who will also perform at the "Stick Night" concert.

In addition to inventing and building the Chapman Stick instruments, Emmett has also had a career as a performer and recording artist. From 1969 to the present, Emmett has done both solo performances and played with many jazz legends. He has done concert tours playing colleges, and has performed throughout the world.

In 1985 Emmett released a solo album titled Parallel Galaxy. This recording contained ten pieces, some solos and some duets. The album is available on vinyl, cassette, and was remastered for CD in 1999.

One piece, Backyard, that appears on the album was used in the film Dune. The director's cut of the film shows a decorated Stick painted gold playing the role of the mythical "baliset" instrument described in Frank Herbert's novel. Emmett's recording is what we hear when we see Patrick Stewart play the baliset.

In 1987 Emmett released his Hands Across the Board video. The tape includes a live solo performance of Emmett followed by an interview.

About MiraCosta College and Oceanside, CA
Oceanside is roughly forty minutes north of downtown San Diego, and about ninety minutes south of downtown LA (on a good traffic day). As the name MiraCosta implies, the college has a great view of the coast and generally features the weather that Southern California is famous for. MiraCosta's website (www.miracosta.cc.ca.us) is loaded with information about the college and has a nice campus map here:

http://www.miracosta.edu/officeofthepresident/pio/downloads/map_ocn.pdf

The seminar will take place in the recently completed Music Building; a wonderful state of the art facility shown in orange at the bottom left of the campus map. and the Stick Night performance on Saturday night will take place in the college's amazing new Concert Hall, located adjacent to the Music Building.

Since Oceanside is something of a tourist town, there are many hotels located fairly close to the College. Motel 6 has a location "almost" within walking distance (maybe 2-3 miles) that many past seminar attendees have stayed at (motel6.com, look for the location on college avenue in Oceanside, near highway 78). MiraCosta's physical address (for online computations) is One Barnard Dr, Oceanside, CA 92056. If you have specific questions about the area, e-mail Tom Griesgraber at tom@thossounds.com

Hope to see you there!
